Here at Fields FIAT of Highland Park, we are proud to be your FIAT dealer and offer you a large selection of new and pre-owned models on the lot today. While you are checking out all of our great models, we want you to think about where the FIAT came from. It's like learning your own family tree, we think it makes the purchasing experience that much more special.

FIAT, short for Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino, has a history that extends over a century back. Established in 1899 by Giovanni Agnelli and several investors. In 1899, the first car was built, the 3 ½ CV. In 1903, FIAT built the first truck, and in 1908 FIAT first starting exporting to the U.S. Since 1910, FIAT has maintained its position as the largest automotive company in Italy.  The Lingotto factory was constructed in Europe in from 1916-1922. This five-floor factory was the largest in Europe and became a symbol of the Italian auto industry.  During World War II FIAT reduced their production of cars, focusing more on the production of commercial vehicles. In 1953, the FIAT developed their first diesel powered vehicle, the 1400. As a result of an economic boom, car demands and production greatly increased in the 1960s and 1970s.  In 1969 FIAT also purchased Lancia carmaker and half of Ferrari. As a result of high production demands, the "Robogate" robotic assembly system was created in 1978 to increase the speed of production. In 1986, FIAT beats out Ford and buys Alfa Romero from the Italian Government, solidifying its spot as Europe's largest automaker.

In 2004 new CEO Servio Marchionne was appointed. Marchionne increased the market share of FIAT and reintroduced the 500 series, originally introduced in 2001, to the United States. In January of 2009, FIAT and Chrysler formed a global alliance. In 2012, FIAT also formed an alliance with Mazda to develop a new roadster.
